Please make sure that you have clearly understood all the doctor's recommendations before starting treatment after surgery.
Sometimes, after oral surgery, patients may experience pain, swelling and bleeding.
Important!
If any of the following problems occur after surgery, you should IMMEDIATELY contact your doctor
- Bleeding for 4 or more hours after the operation is completed
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Rising body temperature
- Pain that does not subside 24 hours after surgery
- Increased swelling 72 hours or more after surgery
Pain prevention
Before any intervention, a ‘freezing’ (local anaesthetic) is carried out, so the area is numb. A sensation of swelling occurs.
The duration of the numbness (anaesthesia) depends on the type and amount of freezing (anaesthetic). While the anaesthetic is in effect, you may bite your cheek, lip or tongue involuntarily. The anaesthetic will wear off completely after a few hours. Try not to eat until the anaesthesia has worn off completely.
Minor pain in the surgical area is a normal reaction after the numbness has stopped. Pain of the greatest intensity lasts 24-48 hours after surgery. Swelling in the area of intervention may increase by the 3rd day. Some discomfort in the operated area may last up to 3-5 days. The severity of discomfort depends on your general health and activity.
If you lead an active lifestyle, the discomfort in the postoperative period may be more. After surgery, it is best to rest for 7 to 10 days. Your doctor may prescribe pain medication, also called analgesics, to relieve pain. He or she may also prescribe medicines to prevent infection. These medicines are called antibiotics.
DON'T
- Tell your oral surgeon about any medicines you are taking or intend to take on the advice of friends and enemies.
- Follow the instructions for taking the prescribed medication.
- If the pain does not subside or increases, inform your doctor.
DO NOT
- Do not exceed the recommended dose of medication.
- Do not drink alcohol after surgery or until the medication is finished.
- Do not drive a vehicle if you are taking narcotic analgesics.
Bleeding Prevention
Your doctor has placed a gauze balloon at the site of the surgical wound to reduce bleeding until the blood clots. This balloon should be bitten (not chewed) and left in your mouth for 30 minutes after surgery.
Mild discharge of blood from a stitched wound may continue for one to two hours after surgery. A small amount of blood may ooze from the wound for up to 24 hours. Note that even a small amount of blood stains the saliva, which may give the appearance of significant bleeding (which is not true).
Important!
If it is more than four hours after the intervention and the bleeding does not stop, contact your doctor. Twenty-four hours after surgery, you can brush your teeth without touching the surgical wound.
DO NOT
- You must not rinse your mouth for 24 hours after surgery, even if there is an unpleasant taste due to blood or medication used.
- Do not chew the gauze ball on the wound or make sucking movements.
- Physical activity is prohibited for 7 to 10 days after surgery.
- Avoid taking tea and coffee. It is better to eat cooled food. Hot food increases blood flow, which can provoke bleeding.
- For a fortnight after surgery, smoking and alcohol consumption is prohibited. Violation of this recommendation can lead to increased bleeding in the area of surgery, increases the likelihood of infection and slows healing.
Prevention of swelling
Swelling may occur after surgery and may increase over a period of THREE days. After this time, the swelling will begin to decrease and will disappear completely in five to seven days. When the swelling begins to subside, a haematoma (bruise) may appear, which is usually located below the area of surgical intervention. The haematoma resolves within 10-14 days after surgery.
DON'T
- Immediately after surgery, put cold on the area of intervention. You can use frozen water, ice wrapped in a towel, or frozen vegetables.
- Ice the area for 5 minutes, then take a 30-minute break, and so on for 12 hours after surgery.
- If swelling continues to increase after 72 hours after surgery or if it does not decrease within 5 days, contact your doctor.
DO NOT
Do not apply heat to the area of surgery or massage the area of surgery after surgery, as this will cause a significant increase in swelling.
Sinus lift. Instructions for the patient.
Before surgery
- For three days before the operation you should rinse your mouth with chlorohexidine 0.1% solution 2 times a day for 2 minutes.
- 2-3 hours before the operation it is necessary to take the medication prescribed by your doctor. This is usually an antibiotic.
- If you are worried, you can start taking drops of tincture of valerian, motherwort or valocordine the day before the operation. It should be remembered that these drugs reduce the reaction, so for a day after taking them you can not drive precise mechanisms.
After surgery
- Do not eat or drink for two hours after surgery. Hot food and hot drinks should be excluded for 48 hours after surgery. Eat soft food until the stitches are removed.
- Do not spit out and do not displace the tampon placed on the area of intervention for 30 minutes. Swallow saliva, not spit it out.
- Apply ice to the area of intervention. You can use a frozen water bottle, ice wrapped in a towel, frozen vegetables, meat, fish. Ice is applied through a cloth for 5 minutes with a 30-minute break. Ice is applied for 12 hours after surgery, usually until very late in the evening on the day of surgery.
- Please do not blow your nose! Sneezing and coughing are only allowed with the mouth open! If the nasal mucosa dries out (this can happen in air-conditioned rooms), physiological solution (saline) or boiled water can be injected into the nasal passages.
- Do not fly by plane or travel by high-speed trains for 3 weeks.
- No diving for one month.
- Do not play sports for 2 weeks.
The following medicines should be taken after surgery:
- Rinse your mouth with chlorgesidine 0.1% solution after each meal until the stitches are removed.
- After rinsing, apply Metrogil-Dent to the area of the sutures.
- Painkillers to take for 3 days according to the scheme below, then as needed
- Ibuprofen 200 mg one tablet 4 times a day,
or
- Ketanov 10 mg 3 times a day (maximum 8 tablets a day),
or
- Nimesil, taken orally, 1 sachet (100 mg nimesulide) 2 times a day. It is recommended to take the drug after meals. The contents of the sachet are poured into a glass and dissolved in about 100 ml of water. The prepared solution should not be stored.
- Vasoconstrictors, antibiotic, antihistamines.
All analgesic preparations are recommended to be taken after meals.
